If you want to keep your bathroom clean, the toilet is usually the hardest part. Many commercial cleaning products claim to work well – but they’re also full of chemicals that are bad for both you and the planet. So if you’d like an eco-friendly alternative which doesn’t carry any health risks and still does a great job, we have one word for you: citric acid. This natural substance is found in lemons and other citrus fruits. It’s powerful stuff when it comes to removing grime, limescale and stains – and best of all there are no nasty fumes to inhale.
Here are three ways to use it for cleaning your toilet:
Take 2 tablespoons of citric acid powder and mix this with 500 ml of warm water (this is about 2 cups). Stir well until all the citric acid has dissolved. You could put the solution into a spray bottle – this might make it easier to use later.
Tip or squirt the citric acid solution right around the inside of the bowl so it covers as much as possible. Pay special attention to any areas that look stained or where there is limescale buildup (hard water marks). It’s also worth putting some solution under the rim too – this is where water comes in and out when you flush, and germs collect there.
Let the citric acid solution sit in the bowl for at least half an hour. If you have really tough stains (or you just like the idea of leaving it to work overnight), feel free. This stuff does two things at once very well: breaks down minerals from hard water and kills germs (bacteria etc.).
After allowing the solution to sit for some time, don rubber gloves and employ a toilet brush to scrub inside the bowl. Pay particular attention to spots with tough stains or rings, giving them a thorough scrub to help remove grime.
After you’ve scrubbed down the entire toilet, flush it to rinse away both the citric acid solution and any dirt or mineral deposits loosened by the acid (or your scrubbing). If any stains remain, you can either repeat the process or do a quick touch-up with the leftover solution.
Dealing with Difficult Stains
For stains that just won’t budge, try sprinkling extra citric acid powder directly onto them once you’ve applied the solution. Leave it for an hour, then give it another good scrub.
Regular Care
Keep things clean and fresh by using a citric acid solution in the toilet once a week. This will stop limescale building up and ensure your bathroom continues to smell nice.
Don’t Mix It
Citric acid must not be mixed with bleach or any other product. Stick to using it alone to avoid creating dangerous fumes – and to make sure you get everything completely clean!
